Episode 1 Jaci

Small rays of light fought through the dark canopy above and the scent of pine clung to my already inflamed lungs. Resting against the base of a massive tree I trembled as I ran the back of my arm across my mouth. I couldn’t let them see me like this… I gripped the ridged bark for support as I forced myself onto shaky legs.

“Jaci, where’d you go?” Nox hissed from the other side of the bushes.

I peeked around the tree and forced a smile on my face. “I’m here.” I wiped the mud from my hands and straightened my father’s bow that hung over my shoulder as I stood.

His brows knitted together as his eyes roamed over what I assumed must have been a very green-tinged face. Luckily for me, his attention snapped over his shoulder toward the sound of branches that cracked behind him.

Three men from our village fought through the dense thicket a mere stone’s throw away. I gave them a smile that fell almost as fast as it had raised on my lips. The state of my people was soul-crushing. Their faces were dirty and all of their eyes were black and beady with hunger and I could see it in their faces. The hunt had gone no better for them.

Tingles raced up my arm as Nox’s hand trailed from my wrist to my elbow as he helped me over a fallen tree. His eyes locked on mine and I swallowed the mouthful of spit that rapidly filled my mouth again.

“You don’t look—“

I swallowed hard and stepped onto the moss-covered floor in front of us. “I’m fine. Really.”
